Popular Science Series – Paleontology in Pictures by Mr. Vincent WONG
Paleontology in Pictures
by Mr. Vincent WONG
Paleontology is the study of prehistoric life largely through fossils, which are the naturally preserved remains of once living organisms. The generally accepted scientific standard established is that 99.9% of species that have ever lived are extinct. Fossils enable us to study and appreciate some of these animals and plants which once existed and flourished. Some as small as trilobites or as large as dinosaurs had even dominated the living world for hundred millions of years! Simply by watching how they once looked like is already most mesmerizing. Dating and comparing fossils allow us to trace back how life probably first developed. Paleontology also provides strong support to Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution as well as Alfred Wegner's Continental Drift Theory and Plate Tectonics. This talk will try to explain in layman terms all of the above as well as how fossils were formed, their importance, useful method of dating, the Earth's Geological Time Table as well as a glossary of the iconic fossils in each key Geological period. This will be accompanied by the display of some real fossil specimens.
