Lunch Talk Series - A Visit to the Hakka Earth Buildings & Guangdong's Fortified Towers
客家土樓與廣東碉樓
by Mr. Vincent WONG
The Earth Buildings or Tulou (土樓) in South China were constructed by the Hakka people (客家人) over hundreds of years for protection against enemies and the elements. These architecturally unique buildings are both very functional as well as aesthetic. More importantly, they bear witness to the long and painful history of their builders and occupants. The Fortified Towers (碉樓) built by the locals of Guangdong (本地人) were constructed for similar reasons at a much later date but also during a turbulent period in China's history. Serious armed conflicts between these two groups plus the ever-deteriorating economic environment finally resulted to their massive immigration overseas which had substantial political and economic impact in their destined countries. The huge diaspora population (僑民) so created also had profound influence on China's contemporary history and remain important even today. The talk attempts to explain the above which somehow have been forgotten. This will be followed by a virtual tour of the buildings and towers visited.
Testimonials from participants of previous travel talks and study tours led by Vincent:

“Very useful guide for my future trip!”
”Now what I have seen makes much more sense. Thank you!”
