TURKEY – Where Continents Collide & Civilizations Converge (Parts 1 & 2)
by Mr. Vincent WONG
Few nations can claim to be the cradle of empires, the bridge between East and West, and a year-round destination for travellers. Turkey is the rare gem. Straddling the divide between Europe and Asia, this transcontinental country offers a sensory tapestry unmatched in the world. The country's rich history and culture began with the neolithic settlement more than 10,000 years ago. Then its land was being ruled respectively by the Hittites, the Phrygians, the Urartians and the Lydians. This was followed by the conquests of the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Seljuks, the Mongols and finally the Turks who created the Ottoman Empire. The collapse of the Empire after its defeat in World War I resulted to the formation of many new nations as well as a new Turkish Republic which redefined the regions geopolitics. Religious diffusion and trade on the old Silk Road also played important roles in shaping the country we now know. History aside, today's travellers are also attracted by the buzzling bazaars of Istanbul; the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia and Pamukkale, not to mention the pristine beaches of the Turquoise Coast despite ravaging earthquakes which happen from time to time. This talk will attempt to explain all the above to be followed by virtual visits to some of the main tourist destinations.
