CENTENARY FINE WINE DINNER - Tasting Note & Dinner Menu

Robert Parker's Wine Tasting Note

 Pichon Lalande - Pauillac

(2nd growth)

2003

95

The brilliant, opulent, fleshy 2003 Pichon Lalande (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot) possesses a high pH of 3.8 as well as 13% alcohol. Reminiscent of the 1982 Pichon Lalande (which never shut down and continues to go from strength to strength), the dense plum/purple-colored 2003 offers gorgeous aromas of blackberries, plum liqueur, sweet cherries, smoke, and melted licorice. Fleshy, full-bodied, and intense, displaying a seamless integration of wood, acidity, tannin, and alcohol, this beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 20 years or more.
 Sociando Mallet - Haut Medoc

2000

92

This is a beautiful wine and certainly one of the great sleepers of the vintage. I originally predicted that this wine would be at full maturity between 2007 and 2028, but I would push that back by a good 4-5 years. Still inky/purple, with notes of acacia flowers intermixed with wet rocks, black currants, and blueberries, the wine is full-bodied, displays no real evidence of any oak, and offers up terrific concentration, texture, and length. It should continue to evolve for 20+ years.
 Clos Badon - Saint Emilion

2005

90

A sexy sleeper of the vintage from St.-Emilion, the 2005 Clos Badon boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as aromas of charcoal, espresso roast, sweet currants and cherries, and a touch of incense. A broad, endearing, seductive mouthfeel, medium to full body, and no hard edges suggest it can be enjoyed now and over the next 10-12 years.
 Puech-Haut - Southern France

2009

93

I'm infringing on David Schildknecht's territory, but he has not yet tasted this wine. From a bio-dynamically farmed estate, this 2009 is a blend of 55% Grenache (from 60- to 75-year-old vines) and 45% Syrah (from 40-year-old vines), all planted in limestone soils, and aged completely in concrete tanks. This remarkable offering is a naked expression of the vivid terroir and excellent fruit found in this region. The incredible aromatics consist of forest floor, spring flowers, sweet black currants, raspberries, licorice, and incense. With a pure, velvety, seamless, full-bodied texture and a finish that lasts 30+ seconds, this wine possesses a stunning integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol, suggesting this 2009 will age nicely for 3-5 years, possibly as long as a decade. However, it will be hard to resist given its current performance. Bravo!
