Popular Science Talk Series - GEOLOGY FOR TRAVELLERS by Mr. Vincent WONG

Popular Science Talk Series

GEOLOGY FOR TRAVELLERS

by Mr. Vincent WONG

When visiting a country, it is useful to have some basic knowledge in geology in order to help appreciate its natural beauty.

For example, the Nothern Lights, the Great Barrier Reef, the migration of the Monarch butterflies, the Giant's Causeway and the Grand Canyon can all be better explained and understood with some basic geological knowledge.

This talk attempts to cover some of these basic geological knowledge in very layman terms to include the origin of the Earth aka the Big Bang; Earth's structure; Geomagnetism; the creation and significance of the Moon; the Geological Time table; Earth's tectonic history and the Supercontinents; the Story of Rocks; Erosion; nature's sculptor and the Island Builders. These will be followed by a quick summary of Hong Kong's geology and geological history, its related landforms, mineral resources as well as natural geological hazards including earthquakes and landslides.
